How to play 2048

1

Slide the board

Swipe anywhere on the screen, or press the arrow keys or W A S D. Every tile slides as far as it can in that direction.

2

Merge matching tiles

Two tiles with the same number that collide join into one tile worth double. Two 8s become 16, two 16s become 32.

3

Watch the new tiles

After every move a new 2, or sometimes a 4, appears in an empty square.

4

Reach 2048 and beyond

Build the 2048 tile to win, then keep going for 4096 and more. The game ends when the board is full and nothing can merge.

2048 rules and scoring

2048 is a sliding tile puzzle played on a square grid. Each move pushes every tile in one direction. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into a single tile with their sum, and that sum is added to your score. Two 1024 tiles make the 2048 tile and 2048 points.

A tile can only merge once per move, so a row of four 2s becomes two 4s, not one 8. If a move would not change the board at all, it does not count and no new tile appears. The game is over when every square is full and no two neighbors match.

Your score is the total of every merge you make, so bigger tiles are worth far more than many small ones. Your best score and best tile are saved on this device for each board size.

Game modes

Daily 2048 and streak

The Daily 2048 is one game per day on the classic 4x4 board, and it is the same for every player in the world. The starting tiles and the order of new tiles come from the date, so a high score really is a better game, not better luck. Undo is off. Finish today's game to grow your streak, try again to beat your best score for the day, and share your result. The home screen shows when the next daily starts.

Free play with undo

Free play gives you a fresh random game on the board size and goal tile you choose. You get three undos per game. Each undo takes back your last move, but it cannot change which tile comes next, so it fixes a slip without letting you fish for lucky tiles. Free play saves after every move, so you can press Continue later.

Race friends live

Choose Race friends, enter your name and create a room, then share the six character code or the invite link with up to three friends. The host picks the board size and how to win: a time limit of two, three or five minutes, or a target tile. Everyone gets the same starting tiles and the same new tiles after a short countdown. Live scores, top tiles and mini boards show how everyone is doing. The host's game replays every move, so nobody can fake a score. The first player to make the target tile wins, otherwise the highest score when time runs out wins. A player with no moves left keeps their score and watches the rest.

2048 tips and strategies

Choose a corner and keep your biggest tile there. Most strong players use the bottom left or bottom right corner and rarely press the direction that would pull the big tile out of it.

Build a chain along the edge. Line up falling values next to the corner tile, such as 512, 256, 128 and 64, so that one merge sets off the next. Keep that edge row full, because a full row cannot slide sideways and your big tile stays locked in place.

Use mostly two directions, with a third as a backup, and avoid the fourth unless you have no choice. Merge small tiles early, and think one move ahead about where the new tile could appear. On a 3x3 board space runs out fast, so merge whenever you can. On a 5x5 board you can afford to build a second chain.

Why play 2048

2048 is quick to learn and hard to master. It trains planning and patience, and a game fits into a short break. The Daily 2048 makes a nice habit, and racing friends on the same tiles turns a calm puzzle into a fun contest.

2048 FAQ

Is 2048 free to play online?

Yes. 2048 on OnlineGames2Play is completely free and runs in your browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is nothing to download, no account and no sign up.

How do you play 2048?

Swipe or press an arrow key to slide every tile on the board in that direction. Two tiles with the same number that touch merge into one tile worth double, and a new 2 or 4 appears after every move. Keep merging to build bigger tiles until no move is left.

What happens when I reach 2048?

You get a celebration and a choice. Press Keep going to continue the same game toward 4096, 8192 and beyond, or start a new game. Your score keeps counting either way.

How does the Daily 2048 work?

Every day there is one Daily 2048 on the classic 4x4 board. Everyone gets the same starting tiles and the same order of new tiles, so scores are directly comparable. Finish a daily game every day to grow your streak, and share your score with friends. A new daily starts at midnight UTC.

Can I undo a move?

In free play you get three undos per game, and each one takes back your last move. The Daily 2048 and races have no undo, so every score there is earned the same way. Undo also cannot change which tile appears next.

Which board size should I choose?

The 4x4 board is the classic game. The 3x3 board is very tight and hard, so its goals are 256, 512 and 1024. The 5x5 board gives you more room to plan and is a good way to reach 4096 or 8192.

Can I play 2048 with friends?

Yes. Choose Race friends, create a room and share the code or invite link with up to three friends. The host picks the board size and either a time limit or a target tile. Everyone gets the same tiles and sees live scores. The first to the target tile wins, or the highest score when time runs out.

What is the best strategy for 2048?

Keep your biggest tile in one corner and build a chain of falling values along one edge, for example 1024, 512, 256 and 128 in a row. Mostly use two or three directions, keep that edge row full so the big tile cannot move, and merge small tiles early before the board fills up.
