How to play Highway Rush

1

Pick a mode

Choose Endless, Two way traffic, Time attack or a mission, then watch the 3, 2, 1 countdown.

2

Steer through traffic

Change lanes to pass cars, vans, trucks and buses. Watch for blinking turn signals before a car moves over.

3

Chase near misses

Pass close at more than 70 km/h for bonus points, a combo and a fuller nitro bar.

4

Upgrade your car

Spend the cash you earn on new cars, paint, engine, steering, brakes and a bigger nitro tank.

Rules and scoring

Highway Rush is a 3D traffic racing game seen from a chase camera just above and behind your car. The road has four lanes, a guard rail on each side and a steady stream of traffic. One touch of another vehicle is a crash and ends the run, so the skill is in finding gaps and committing to them at speed.

Distance: every metre you drive scores points. Above 100 km/h you get a speed bonus that grows the faster you go, so a run at 200 km/h scores twice as fast as a run at 100 km/h.

Overtakes and near misses: each car you pass adds 10 points. Pass one with only about a metre to spare at more than 70 km/h and it counts as a near miss worth 50 points, rising to 250 with a combo of up to x5 when you chain them within three seconds.

Nitro: the blue bar under the speedometer fills with near misses and with the nitro cans that float above the road. Hold nitro for a burst of acceleration and a higher top speed until the tank is empty.

Game modes

ModeHow it works
EndlessAll four lanes go your way. Traffic gets busier the further you drive. Your best score is saved.
Two wayThe two left lanes carry oncoming traffic. Driving on the wrong side doubles your distance points.
Time attackStart with 45 seconds. Every 1.5 km a checkpoint adds time. The run ends when the clock hits zero.
Missions30 short goals with three stars each: reach a distance, overtake, near miss, survive two way traffic, hit a top speed, collect nitro or beat the clock.
Online race2 to 4 players on the same road and traffic. Furthest in 2 minutes, or last car standing.

Pause any solo run with P or Escape. The game also pauses by itself when you switch tabs.

Tips for a high score

Look far ahead, not at your bumper. The traffic always leaves at least one lane open, but the open lane moves around. If you read the gaps 100 metres in front of you, you can drift into the right lane early instead of swerving at the last moment.

Trust the turn signals. A car with a blinking orange light is about to change lanes. It never swings across when you are right next to it, but it will close a gap you were aiming for, so pick another route.

Save nitro for clear road. Nitro is most useful when the next 150 metres are empty. Using it in dense traffic only gives you less time to react.

Brake to find a path. When every lane ahead looks busy, ease off for a second. Traffic drifts forward relative to you and a gap opens up between two cars.

Build combos on purpose. Line up next to a lane of slower cars and hug the lane edge as you pass them. Three or four near misses in a row fill most of the nitro bar.

Garage, cars and upgrades

You start with Pip, a nimble hatchback. Cash from every run and every mission buys seven more original designs: the Mule pickup, the Atlas SUV, the Vela GT sports coupe, the Brute V8 muscle car, the Warden interceptor, the Stinger supercar and the Zero R hypercar. Each car has five upgrade levels for engine, steering, brakes and nitro, and ten paint colours. The stats panel shows exactly what each upgrade changes.

Race friends online

Tap Race friends, enter your name and share the room code or invite link. Up to four players join from their own phones or computers. Everyone gets the same seeded highway and the same traffic, and the other drivers show up as see through ghost cars with a coloured marker. A live board lists everyone's distance. The host's game is the referee: it checks every reported distance against the car's top speed and the race clock, ignores impossible jumps and decides the winner.

Why play a traffic racing game?

A run takes one to three minutes, a good short break that trains quick decisions, reaction time and focus. It runs on phones, tablets and computers with no download, in portrait or landscape.

Highway Rush FAQ

Is Highway Rush free to play?

Yes. Highway Rush is completely free and runs in your web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to download, no sign up and no real money: every car and upgrade is bought with cash you earn by driving.

How do I steer and use nitro?

On a computer use the arrow keys or WASD to steer and accelerate, Space to brake and Shift or N for nitro. On a phone tap or hold the left or right half of the screen to steer and use the gas, brake and nitro buttons. You can also switch on tilt steering and auto accelerate in the settings.

What counts as a near miss?

A near miss is when you pass a car at more than 70 km/h with less than about one metre of space between the two cars. Each one adds bonus points and fills your nitro bar, and near misses within three seconds of each other build a combo up to x5.

How do I earn cash and unlock new cars?

Every run pays cash based on your score, and missions pay an extra reward the first time you finish them plus a bonus for every new star. Spend cash in the garage on eight original cars and on engine, steering, brakes and nitro upgrades.

What is two way traffic mode?

In two way traffic the two left lanes carry oncoming cars. Driving on the wrong side doubles the points you earn for distance, but oncoming cars close in very fast, so it is the riskiest and most rewarding way to score.

How does the online race work?

Tap Race friends, share the six letter code or invite link, and up to four players join from their own devices. Everyone drives the same seeded road with the same traffic, and the other players appear as see through ghost cars. The host picks furthest in two minutes or last car standing, and the host's game checks every reported distance and decides the winner.

Why does the game look simpler on my phone?

Highway Rush measures your frame rate while you drive. If your device struggles, it lowers the resolution, turns off soft shadows and thins out the scenery so the game stays smooth. You can also choose Low, Medium or High quality yourself in the settings.

Is my progress saved?

Your cash, cars, upgrades, paint colours, mission stars and best scores are saved in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser data or using a private window starts a fresh garage.
